The Township of Esquimalt is fortunate to have a robust volunteer community who help out with events, community growth initiatives, keeping our parks beautiful and so much more. We want to hear from our volunteers as we update our approach to volunteer recognition.

Why are we doing this?

At a Committee of the Whole meeting held on October 23, 2023, staff provided Council with options regarding volunteer recognition and activities to support the attraction of new community members. It was recommended that staff reach out to the volunteer community to ask for feedback to ensure that any revisions to the applicable policies were meaningful to Esquimalt’s valued volunteers.

Background

In the past, volunteers have been formally recognized by attending a dinner or tea. The number of guests continues to grow annually; however, some organizations and community volunteers have not been included due to not been identified. We are looking to identify an inclusive approach to celebrate the contributions of all volunteers.

There are several options for Council regarding volunteer attraction and recognition such as:

  • Highlighting volunteers in the Township’s newsletter, "The Current";
  • Establishing a specific section on the Township’s website focused on attraction and recognition of volunteers;
  • Sharing stories and photos (with permission) of volunteers on the Township’s digital channels;
  • Providing volunteer groups with recognition certificates, and;
  • Hosting an annual “volunteer fair” event where volunteer groups can set up information booths to attract new volunteers, and where Mayor and Council can recognize the efforts of current volunteers. The annual event would take place typically during National Volunteers’ Week at the end of April, and held at a Township facility where coffee, tea and baked goods would be served.

Thank you for taking the survey. A report to council will be presented in January 2024.

Your input is greatly appreciated and will be used to inform Council’s decision when considering amendments to the current volunteer attraction and recognition processes.
