Why change Esquimalt Road west of Admirals

Esquimalt Road west of Admirals remains a part of the priority corridor for east-west cycling facilities and provides a key connection to Admirals Road/E&N Trail. It connects to DND lands as well as our highest density development zone in the Township. It is also identified as being in need of significant pavement resurfacing, with a rating of Very Poor to Poor.

Due to the reduced vehicle volumes west of Admirals, a 4 lane cross-section is not required. A reduced cross-section can maintain traffic volumes, support active transportation and is complimentary to the new reduced speed limits on Esquimalt Road

What are the current traffic volumes on Esquimalt Road?

How is on-street parking changing in Phase 2 (Canteen to Admirals, Fraser to Lampson)?

To fit new bike lanes and roadway improvements within the existing Esquimalt Road corridor:

    • 69 on-street parking spaces will be removed where space is constrained (64 between Canteen and Admirals and 5 between Fraser and Lampson)
    • 11 on-street parking spaces will be retained in select areas between Admirals and Sturdee where space allows to support short-term parking

    To help offset these changes:

    • 56 new on-street parking spaces have been added on nearby residential streets
    • All new spaces are within a 5-minute walk of Esquimalt Road in select areas from Constance to Fraser
    • Time limits are used to support turnover and short visits

Parking utilization was reviewed as part of this process, showing that on-street parking along Esquimalt Road is not fully utilized on average, and that nearby streets have capacity to accommodate parking demand.

Why is the crosswalk moving at Fernhill?

Changes to the crosswalk locations are proposed to better support walking, rolling, and biking through the intersection.

The existing crossing location has been identified as having sight line concerns. Moving the crossing location to the eastern side, improves sight lines and will meet BC Transit guidelines for separation of crosswalks/bus stops.

Will the new bus stop on Esquimalt Rd, east of Constance remove potential parking from the ultimate road design?

Parking would only be removed to allow for the bus stop if the bus stop was implemented before the bike lane project was completed. In either proposed buffered or protected bike lanes on Admirals Road, parking is identified to be removed from the south side of Esquimalt Road, between Admirals Road and Constance Avenue. If the bus stop was implemented with the Active Transportation improvements, the bus stop would stop in the bike lane, similar to Esquimalt Road, East of Lampson. 2 parking spaces are still being proposed on the north side of Esquimalt Road, between Admirals Road and Constance Avenue
